I am in Toowoomba for the Qld PGA but before I give you the update on the tournament thus far I will update you on my last blog where I was testing some new gear with possible equipment news to come. I have stayed with Callaway for all of my clubs with the exception of driver and also there is a change with my ball/shoe and glove. I have agreed to terms with Taylormade for the driver and Titleist Footjoy for the ball/shoe and glove. It was largely based on a financial opportunity and with loads of expenses coming my way playing in Japan some extra money will be very helpful. Callaway are very happy to still have me on board but so are the other companies too. They will no doubt be very keen to infiltrate my bag a little more when I am in Japan this year.
On the coaching front there has been a significant change too, Murray Lott who was coaching my short game last year towards the end of the year has taken over the reigns for my entire game. Kevin Healey has been brilliant over the past two years and I thank him for developing me as a player over that time. He has certainly been the brains behind an improvement that has been significant over those two years. The change is all about a feeling from within that it was time to move on. Thanks big Kev for everything you have helped me with over the two years.
I am equally as excited in working with Murray as he is bringing a freshness and new excitement to the Guyatt Camp. A short game overhaul and long game simplicity along with great planning and strategising has me very excited at the prospect of 2014!!
Now to this week. The Qld PGA is in Toowoomba again at the City Golf club where it is being held for the 5th time this year. I began on Thursday, Jack's 10th birthday, and struggled with my wedge play to only shoot 1 under. 1 under may sound ok but when the leaders shot 9 under. I came back for round two and improved my wedge game but unfortunately my driving of the ball was average at best. I battled hard and made some clutch putts to sign for a 3 under par round, putting me at 4 under for the tournament. Once again you might read 3 under and think that's pretty good but the leader managed to shoot 8 under and get to 17 so I am only 13 shots behind!!
Today, the third round I played the best of the week and with a cm here or there on the greens it could have been at great day, a super low score. I managed to shoot 5 under and get my self moving in the right direction at least and with the leaders stalling slightly and only being at 18 under I did make up some ground finally. I am hoping tomorrow is going to continue the sequence of scores from this week or maybe even skip one number in the sequence for me….69, 67, 65……..skip 63 and go straight to 61!!!
I am improving with most aspects of my game and am simply hoping to improve again tomorrow and more importantly improve each week of these three weeks of tournaments. I hope you are all staying out of the heat and enjoying your golf!
