Today was a great day. And before you think, awesome Matty shot a real low score, I didn't. I had 3 over par.
The reason it was great was because I really enjoyed myself out there for the first time in a long while. I have been having a bit of a battle with my mental game and anxiety of late but after an awesome couple of weeks at home sorting through it all, I felt free out there today and was able to just enjoy the challenge of playing one of the most demanding sports professionally on the planet.
I started solidly and was 1 under through 6 holes. A nice birdie on the par 5 second after a great drive and sublime 3 iron to within 25ft set up an eagle chance for me. I didn't make it but a nice birdie all the same. A poor drive into this incredibly long and thick rough on the fifth lead to a bogey but I made a great birdie on the 6th.
The 7th is a par three across the water, a difficult hole with the pin on the left side right near the water. I had been hitting my irons well but on this occasion I hit a poor shot and found the water. The only thing that could have saved me was a stray turtle swimming by allowing my ball to ricochet back to dry land! I can't believe that didn't happen!! To the drop zone I went and I managed a great 8 iron to 4ft. I made the putt for a great bogey. Meanwhile one of the other guys in my group hit the green off the tee but watched his birdie putt run past, his par putt also slide by only then to miss his putt for bogey. It is a crazy green and I really felt for this young guy.
From there I proceeded to play really solid golf all the way to the 17th hole just making 1 bogey and the rest pars. I had some good chances but just could buy the putt I was craving. I putted left handed for the entire round today, a first in a big tournament like this. That in itself was a great part of the day and I really feel like it might be the turning point for me. Looking forward to tomorrow on some nicer greens.
My day turned a little right at the end of the day with 2 crucial missed fairways leaving impossible shots from the thick rough. I had to just accept it and took the 2 bogies to finish. Never a fun way to finish the day and kind of leaves a sour taste in the mouth but in truth my day simply left me wanting more. I am looking forward to that alarm going off at 4:30am tomorrow and getting back to work!!
