After playing the two courses we needed needed to prepare on this week at 13th Beach, I managed to venture down to Barwon Heads this afternoon. After a sneaky look at the course a couple of days ago when I went for a ride down after dinner one evening, I had to play. From what I could see by bike, it was high on my list of things to do this week. Links golf stirs something inside of me, my passion for the game is at an all time high whenever my eyes gaze upon a links layout. Looking through the top 30 links courses in the world the other night I have played 7 of them, and would dearly love to play them all.
This afternoon I got to add Barwon Heads to that list of links courses. It truly is a gem of a course and is now a course that will be highly recommended by me in the future. It has a mix of great short par 4's, some cracking par 3's and some gettable par 5's to help your score should the other holes be eating into your handicap! The fairway undulations are great creating difficulties from the fairways and the greens have a mix of the severe and subtle in their gradients. What I truly love is the landscaping. It is kind of like it was meant to be that there is a golf course here, and also meant to be that the bunkers be positioned exactly where they are. It is a great use of the land and if you manage to have the time to look around you whilst you are playing the scenery of the coastline is goegeous.
All in all it was an afternoon doing what I love on the type of course I love with amazing vistas all around, the only thing missing where all the people I love! I guess I can't have everything!! If you are a golf nut and live in Melbourne, take the drive or ferry and treat yourself to a hit here. Likewise if you are travelling to see the Great Ocean road or mighty Geelong Cats play, make the detour to Barwon Heads GC for a special afternoon. Thanks to Langas from the Aussie Tour for sorting me out a hit and thanks to Ashley and his team for looking after me. I will be back!!! Brilliant track!!!
